Lift Up You Eyes to the Hills

November 3, 2016

Dear Self,

I know that things are hard right now. I know that exhaustion has seeped into your bones and your heart, and a weariness you can’t always talk about, let alone describe, has taken root. I know you are sad and angry and hurt; that dreams have come and gone and hopes have been deferred. I know that your plan has flown by the wayside and you often feel like your groping in the dark; afraid to step, afraid to turn. I know some days you are lonely and sometimes feel forgotten. But hear this… you are not alone.

Lift up your eyes to the hills.

The temptation will always be to look to the pantry, or the TV, or a good (or not so good) book, or even a good friend. And, while some of those are ok, none of them have the power to heal. Or to mend. Or to restore. But He does and he will.

Lift up your eyes to the hills.

Turn your face with expectation and look. He will come. He will restore what the locust has eaten. He will bring joy where there is mourning. He will bring life and hope and courage.

You are not alone, even in the valley. And you will not be here forever. This is just for a time. And, as hard as it is to believe, it is a time that was chosen just for you. A gift, though painful at times, and a way of drawing you closer to the source of life, and hope, and joy.

Lift up your eyes to the hills.

He will come. And when you can’t see him coming, when there is darkness and fog and the view is hazy, listen. His voice will lead you, his word will guide you, and you will find shelter.

Remember, oh my soul, that he is your helper. When it’s dark and cold, he is not sleeping. When the world is silent, when everyone else is gone, he is awake. He keeps you in his hand. Whether in the heat of the day or the silence of the night, he is there and you are safe.

Lift up your eyes to the hills and wait. Wait with a holy patience, the type of patience that defies earthly expectations. Wait with a hope that comes from Christ alone, that binds you to him, that knows beyond a human understanding that he will come. Because he will. He promised in his word that you are not alone. You are not forgotten. You are loved.

And when you have no other words, no prayers, not even any thoughts to break through… when there is nothing else to hold on to, hold on to this, that your help comes from God alone and he will be your keeper forever.

I lift up my eyes to the hills.
From where does my help come?
My help comes from the LORD,
who made heaven and earth.

He will not let your foot be moved;
he who keeps you will not slumber.
Behold, he who keeps Israel
will neither slumber nor sleep.

The LORD is your keeper;
the LORD is your shade on your right hand.
The sun shall not strike you by day,
nor the moon by night.

The LORD will keep you from all evil;
he will keep your life.
The LORD will keep
your going out and your coming in
from this time forth and forevermore.

Psalm 121
